POS, known as point of sale point of sale refers to the systems which includes both the software and hardware for 'checking out' customers.  Essentially an POS or point of sale is the new computerized cash register.  

Point of sale systems are used widely in retail establishments, restaurants, hotel/motels, entertainment complexes and in other facilities where a controlled transaction between customer and business take place.

POS systems offer a business a streamlined method of monitoring and managing inventory along with the checkout process and all methods of payment into one soon to be standardized system.
